At her sister’s recommendation, a friend and I were lucky enough to be able to book a morning and afternoon private tour with Samra on our first day in town.... read more We decided not to waste a moment and opted not to stop for lunch, so Samra very kindly spent 5 uninterrupted hours with us, taking us to many of the important sights and knowledgeably and engagingly and to her great credit— also patiently answering our myriad questions as we tried to wrap our heads around the long and complicated history of Sarajevo! Somewhere along the way we squeezed in a Bosnian coffee break and tried to learn how to drink it like a native! Samra also had some good restaurant recommendations and when it was finally time to call it a day she steered us to a place where we enjoyed some delicious

Thanks to Samra we were able to navigate our way around the old town by ourselves the next day as well as ride the cable car, and so were really able to get the very most out of our two days in Sarajevo!

The first morning we did a walking tour of the city -... read more covering both east and west and learning a great deal about the history of Sarajevo - from the Ottoman Empire through the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the start of World War I. Samra also gave us great tips for how to spend our afternoons - viewing the Sarajevo Haggadah, climbing up into the hills for a spectacular view down and visiting City Hall and two great museums. I learned much more from you today!
an unusual lesson – that of detachment. In
your process post-war and as a guide, you
expressed that you learned how to let go your
feelings about a person who may not be
moved by your story of the war.
When attached to an outcome it seems we
suffer and we surely do not change or affect
the other person. This insight has just
changed me. I have heard similar words
before but it never “hit home” as it did today.
We are very grateful that you went beyond a “tour” and shared part of yourself with two strangers.
and left us with so many memories that we
have not yet finished relating them to our
friends. We’d like to say all of those
memories are happy ones but please be
assured that even the ones that left us sad–or
worse–are the memories we needed. People
have to know and they need to learn your
recent history in a way that gets into their
bones.
You have been a fantastic guide!
Thank you for making our time in Sarajevo very special!
Thanks so much for a wonderful four days in Sarajevo.
Thanks so very much for sharing your country and personal story with us yesterday and today.
I value the education you have provided and I will never forget your persistence and resiliency.
