Old town’s architecture blends medieval Ottoman and 19th-century Austro-Hungarian styles, creating a melting pot of oriental influences and western flair. Navigate the fascinating alleyways of Bascarsija, a 16th-century Ottoman marketplace, hiding artisan shops, caravanserais, bazaars and places of worship. You will find mosques, synagogues, Orthodox and Catholic churches a few steps from one another. Stand on the corner, where the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed, subsequently causing the outbreak of World War I.
